General Hurley's Speech - Legacy
|General David Hurley’s acceptance speech as our first National patron; September 6, 2013:|
"I was quite stunned when I was first approached about this position. Those of us in the Defence community have had Legacy as part of our life from the time we walk in the doors. Many members of the ADF are in fact Legatees and have, over time, had their families cared for by Legacy. It’s a national institution and to be asked to be its first patron, given the distinguished names who have gone before, I actually had to think about that quite deeply before saying yes.
It really is virtually clichéd to say it’s a great honour - it’s more than that. I think it represents 90 years and the promise made by former personnel in uniform to our families is deep. So thank you for the honour.
I saw the ad the other night for the first time. I don’t watch a lot of TV, as you might expect, but I did see the ad. I think I had the same reaction that most people did. The silent person standing in the background, not interacting. I think this new direction that Legacy has taken on, not only looking after the families of our deceased members, but those who are incapacitated and can’t care for their families. I think this has been a very important move. When I think back now over the last 10 to 15 years, of all the new veterans and families that are being brought into the Legacy family, there is a new awareness I think of what incapacitation is about and how it affects families. Indeed if we go back to former years, all those Diggers' Rest Homes, that is how we dealt with the issue before. We don’t anymore. We want people to interact but they need help and their families need help. So I will take that on specifically as Patron now, to push that point with our people.
I’d like to thank all those represented here today who provide significant assistance to Legacy both financially, in terms of sponsorship; and in terms of national support; leadership in the roles they play and people who just give up so much of their time on behalf of all our families. As I said, this is about a promise. It’s a promise by the nation to its people in uniform and their families and I’m honoured to be Patron."
