Junior Legatee - Legacy
Junior Legatee from Dorrigo to National Hero
|February 2009 – PRESS ALERT|
Legacy joins the community in congratulating Victoria Cross recipient and former Junior Legatee from Coffs Harbour Legacy, Trooper Mark Donaldson VC.
The distinguished Victoria Cross last awarded 40 years ago, was bestowed to Trooper Donaldson as a result of what is described by Defence as most conspicuous acts of gallantry in action in a circumstance of great peril.
Perth-based Trooper Donaldson exposed himself to enemy fire in Afghanistan in order to draw attention to himself and away from wounded soldiers, gaining time for those wounded to be moved to relative safety. He also moved alone across exposed ground to recover a wounded Afghani interpreter, carried him back to relative safety and administered immediate first aid before returning to the fight.
Trooper Donaldson became associated with Legacy after his father, Greg Donaldson, a Vietnam veteran died and both Legacy and the local RSL took Mark and his younger brother Brent under their wing.
Legacy is committed to supporting the widows and dependents of Australia’s deceased veterans. Both Mark and Brent became Junior Legatees at Coffs Harbour Legacy Club and his personal Legatee Bob Denner, a former Lieutenant who served in the same unit as Greg Donaldson in Vietnam, helped look after the young boys and their mother after their father died.
Mrs Beaumont, a close family friend present at the award ceremony noted “Trooper Donaldson’s decision to turn to the Army was a turn towards the stability of his father’s example and consistent with the notion of a young man seeking a new family.”
Trooper Donaldson found this bond within the Australian Army and Legacy joins the Defence Force and ex-service community in extending congratulations to Trooper Donaldson on his achievement. As with the Donaldson family, Legacy remains committed to extending the same level of care and support to all widows and children of Australia’s deceased veterans.
