Organisational structure - Legacy

Organisational structure

Legacy comprises 49 autonomous clubs across Australia. Many of these clubs (particularly the capital city clubs) consist of divisions/groups/branches allowing it to reach into the community across all regions.

Each club has a properly constituted board or committee and is responsible for the widows and their families living in their area. They also drive all their fundraising efforts locally with all monies raised going to their local efforts.

All clubs report to a central committee called
Legacy Australia Council (LAC). LAC is headquartered in Melbourne. Its members represent all States and Territories. The LAC Chairman is Legatee David Kelly.

There are three standing committees of LAC:
National Pensions Committee;
National Marketing Committee; and
Legacy National Aged Care Committee.

The Badge of Legacy symbolises in its torch the undying flame of service and sacrifice handed to us by our comrades in war who have passed on. In its wreath of laurel, with
its points inverted in remembrance, is the guerdon of honour; that is the meed of those who gave their lives for their country.

Legacy Australia Council

Legacy Australia Council has existed since the early days of Legacy. Originally called the Federal Council, its aim was to ensure that all autonomous Legacy Clubs, wherever they were established, would have some form of basic unity.

LAC's role is that of a coordinating body. It coordinates Legacy activity Australia-wide and ensures that all Clubs adopt the obligations imposed by Legacy's Code.

The Council is required by Statute to meet a minimum of five times a year, but usually meets upwards of nine times.

Legacy Austyralia Council is a continuing instrument of the Conference of Legacy Clubs which meet every two years. It is not a regulatory body. In general, Legacy Australia Council:

  • Make representations to Government and other organisations on matters of significance to Legacy.
  • Collects, co-ordinates and disseminates the views of Clubs as necessary, between conferences.
  • Is charged with the responsibility of monitoring that all clubs adopt the obligations imposed by the Legacy Code, which are mainly related to membership of Legacy and eligibility for Legacy benefits.
  • Has custody of the copyright of the Legacy name and torch emblem and authority of the manner of its use.
  • Assists the host club with arrangements for the National Conference of Legacy Clubs.
