Legacy is dedicated to caring for the families of deceased veterans. Today Legacy's caring and compassionate service assists over 100,000 widows and 1900 children and dependants with a disability. Legacy is a voluntary organisation supported by veterans, servicemen and women, and volunteers drawn from all walks of life. Our support and services now extend to include the dependants of members of today's Australian Defence Force who lose their lives as a result of their military service.
Legacy is dedicated to enhancing the lives and opportunities of our families through innovative and practical programs aimed at:
• the protection of individuals and families basic needs;
• advocating for their entitlements, rights and benefits;
• assisting families through bereavement; and
• helping people thrive, despite their adversity and loss.
There are over 6,100 volunteers around Australia who act as mentors to the widows and their families and who ensure Legacy’s promise to care for the families of deceased veterans is kept.

On behalf of the men and women of the Australian Defence Force I thank all Legatees for their efforts in support of veterans, and in particular, their families.
For over 80 years, Legacy has been a comfort, a support and a friend to those who have lost their loved ones in war. Since Federation, more than 102,000 Australian servicemen and women have lost their lives in wars and conflicts around the world. Every one of these Australians left behind loved ones, families that had to continue on with their lives while bearing the overwhelming grief of a lost partner or loving parent.
Legacy has been there to make sure that these families have not been left alone with their loss. Through your caring and support, thousands of Australian widows, widowers and their children have been taken into the hearts of the nation and found the strength to carry on. I am comforted to know that should the unthinkable happen and we lose one of our fine servicemen or women on operations, that the wonderful men and women of Legacy will be there to provide them with comfort and support. This duty of care is characterised by the timeless ideals of Legacy – voluntary service, caring and mateship.

I am very proud that the men and women of the Australian Defence Force are serving our nation very well. Just as you – the men and women of Legacy – also serve our nation in the selfless work you do. The badge of Legacy shows a torch that symbolises the undying flame of service and sacrifice. May its light continue to shine with undiminished brightness through the years of Legacy service that lie ahead.
