Ted Smout Memorial Bridge Officially Opened
|
|
|
The Ted Smout Memorial Bridge was opened by Premier Anna Bligh on 11 July 2010.
Named in honour of Sandgate World War I veteran and Brisbane Legacy’s longest serving Legatee, the Ted Smout Memorial Bridge is the longest bridge in Australia at 2.7 kilometers. It crosses Bramble Bay, linking the Brisbane suburb of Brighton with the Redcliffe suburb of Clontarf.
The new bridge consists of 78 spans, each 35 m long. It is the first bridge in Australia designed to withstand Hurricane Katrina-type storm events and possibly the only Australian bridge which may have to deal with shallow water storm surge. The Ted Smout Memorial Bridge features three traffic lanes, a 4.5 m wide pedestrian and cycle path and a 10m x 50m fishing platform.

On 28 April 2010, Mrs Phyllis Kelly (Holland Park) celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by family members and well wishers. On hand to congratulate Mrs Kelly, who was enrolled in Brisbane Legacy in 1968, were Brisbane Legacy’s CEO, Steven Blinkhorn, and Welfare Support Manager, Craig Hardy.
Mrs Kelly puts her longevity down to remaining active. An avid tennis player from the age of 16, Mrs Kelly played regularly until the age of 79. She was an accomplished cake decorator and enjoyed all manner of craft activities.
In addition to receiving a card from Legacy, Mrs Kelly received cards from Her Majesty The Queen and Her Excellency, the Governor-General of Australia, and a congratulatory letter from the Prime Minister.

Pictured below are Mrs Eileen Davidson, L/Bill Kelly, Mrs Esme Rogers and Mrs Francis Thornton of the Wynnum Care Group following the presentation of a Certificate of Appreciation to Mrs Davidson in recognition of her service to the Group as President from 2000 to 2010.
Mrs Davidson recently advised that she would not be standing for election as President in 2010 due to ill health. In presenting the certificate, Brisbane Legacy CEO, Steven Blinkhorn, thanked Mrs Davidson for her significant service to the members of the Care Group and for her support of Legacy.
Mr Blinkhorn said that the Care Group was an important part of Legacy’s ability to maintain contact with war and service widows in the Wynnum area and will continue to be important as the number of local and active Legatees diminishes. He went on to say “that the regular meetings and activities of the Group have provided much pleasure and enjoyment for members and have undoubtedly led to many great friendships”.
L/Bill Kelly (Group Convenor) and Mrs Francis Thornton (Group Secretary/Treasurer) will ensure that the Group continues to function in the absence of a President.

On a wet day in April, the Explorers ventured north to Caboolture and Woodford.
In Caboolture, our intrepid Explorers visited the Caboolture Warplane Museum to view a fascinating display of operational aircraft and exhibits depicting much of Australia's flight heritage including: aircraft engines of various kinds; wartime memorabilia; displays depicting famous aviation accidents and tragedies such as the Stinson rescue and the Lincoln crash at Mt. Superbus.
Never one to miss a photo opportunity, most struggled in and out of the cockpit of a MIG 17 (a high-subsonic performance jet fighter aircraft produced in the USSR from 1952) for the obligatory photo. Clearly, the pilots were of a much smaller frame than today’s budding pilots. Other favorites were a Mustang P51D fighter and a CAC Wirraway trainer (manufactured by the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation between 1939 and 1946).

It was then on to Woodford and Strathgordon Clydesdales for lunch. On display were a number of Clydesdales and Shetland ponies. Other than both being named after the region from which they originate, the Clydesdale and Shetland pony were both used for pulling heavy loads. The Clydesdale was extensively used for pulling heavy loads in rural, industrial and urban settings whereas the Shetland pony, because of its size, was used extensively is a breed of pony originating in the Shetland Isles. Shetlands range in size from a minimum height of approximately 28 inches to an official maximum height of 42 inches (10.2 hands, 107 cm) at the withers. (11.2 hands for American Shetlands) Shetland ponies have heavy coats, short legs and are considered quite intelligent. They are a very strong breed of pony, used for riding, driving, and pack purposes.

In January, 22 Legacy Junior Legatees from across Queensland, ranging in age from 8-17 years, attended the nine day camp at Mudjimba, on the Sunshine Coast.
The Camp provides a great base for a range of exciting activities including go–karting, archery, mountain biking, abseiling, sailing, canoeing and bowling.
A feature of the 2010 camp was a visit from a Ugandan drummer who taught the campers how to use African drums. The highlight of the camp was a day of sailing with the Navy cadets from TSS Onslow.
The camp aims to provide Legacy’s youth with a healthy, active and fun time as well as encouraging them to participate in new and challenging activities.

WIDOWS AND VOLUNTEERS XMAS LUNCh
|
|
|
Smiling faces, Christmas cheer and decorations a plenty. All accommpanied with fresh prawns, plum puddings and champagne of course. It was the recipe for a perfect Christmas lunch.
On 23 December 2009, Brisbane Legacy hosted a Christmas luncheon at Legacy House for those who would spend Christmas Day at home alone. The occasion was also an opportunity to thank the many, many volunteers who assist us throughout the year.
|
| | |
| Thanks to the fabulous support of The Grand Central Hotel, there was nothing short of a decadent, Australian Christmas lunch all supplied and delivered fresh on that day. The hotel manager Shannon said when interviewed by one of the local papers: “We’re delighted to be able to support Legacy and put this on”. Again, thank you to Shannon and the team at Grand Central Hotel and we can’t wait to do it all again this year when there will be more fun to be had by all.
