Presentation of MAJGEN Sir John Gellibrand’s medals to TMAG

The medals of Legacy’s founder, Major General Sir John Gellibrand were presented to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery on Monday, 25th August, 2014.

For many decades, the original medals have been displayed at Legacy House in Macquarie St, Hobart before being loaned to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery for Legacy’s 90th Anniversary last year. “Following this display Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery expressed interest in conserving the medals for the future generations and displaying them as part of their Centenary of ANZAC exhibition,” said the President of Hobart Legacy, Peter Hodge. “This was supported by Major General Gellibrand’s grandchildren who reside on the mainland.”

The medals, which include a Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath and Distinguished Service Order and Bar, were presented to TMAG's Board of Trustees Chairman, Sir Guy Green in a short function held at the Museum this morning. Peter Hodge said the public exhibition of the medals allows TMAG to tell the story of one of Tasmania’s most distinguished sons and the organization he founded to care for the families of deceased and incapacitated veterans.
