London Legacy represented at Sutton Veny ANZAC Day service 2011 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| April 2011 The Anzac Day Service at Sutton Veny, south-east of Bath, is commemorated annually on the Sunday closest to Anzac Day. This year the occasion was held on on Sunday, 1 May, at the church of St John the Evangelist, Sutton Veny. In 1918 a number of soldiers, many of them Australian victims of the influenza epidemic of that year, were buried in the church graveyard beside those who had died from wounds. Five Australian nurses are also buried in the graveyard. The small church held a capacity crowd, many of whom were members of the Britain-Australia Society. After the church service the congregation retired to the church graveyard, where a short service was conducted in front of the War Memorial. The official wreath-laying party included Colonel John Hutcheson AM, representing the Australian High Commission, and Sir Christopher Benson FRICS DL, for the Britain-Australia Society. A wreath was laid for London Legacy by Simon Kleinig on behalf of President Lindsay Birrell. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Following the laying of wreaths a bugler played The Last Post and Reveille, a minute’s silence was observed and Laurence Binyon’s The Ode was recited. Afternoon tea, provided by the Australian High Commission, was served in the Sutton Veny Village Hall. Earlier, the West Country Branch of the Britain-Australia Society hosted a luncheon in the HYTHE Officers Mess at Warminster, following its Annual General Meeting. Chairman Richard Pavitt welcomed all and introduced guest speakers Colonel John Hutcheson and Sir Christopher Benson, before presenting London Legacy with a generous donation on behalf of the West Country Branch. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| April 2011 ANZAC Day 2011 saw another fantastic turnout by Australians and New Zealanders. This is an important time of the year for London Legacy, being an opportunity to appeal to the generosity of Aussies and Kiwis to remember the families of those service personel who are no longer with us. This year London Legacy sold pins and collected at many of the ANZAC Day commemorative events. The Dawn Service proved extremely well attended with many people moving on to the wreath-laying service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall. This commemoration was followed by the ANZAC Day service in Westminster Abbey. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| London Legacy was also represented a number of other commemorative events including Villers-Bretonneux where Legatee Honourary Treasurer Vicki Genrich represented London Legacy during the official wreath laying ceremony. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Remembering ANZAC Day | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| February 2011 ANZAC Day this year falls on Easter Monday, 25 April. The day begins in the grey light of the Dawn Service at Hyde Park Corner from 5 am. This is always a popular event attracting thousands, mainly Australians and New Zealanders. Members of the Gallipoli Association, a London-based international organisation which commemorates the wider Gallipoli campaign, also join in and make a valuable contribution to all ANZAC Day activities. After the Dawn Service many people move on to the wreath-laying service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall at 8 am. This is followed by the ANZAC Day service in Westminster Abbey at 9 am, for which reserved tickets are necessary. A wreath-laying ceremony arranged by the Gallipoli Association, to which all are welcome, is to be held at the Gallipoli Memorial in the Crypt at St Paul's Cathedral at 11.15 am. In the lead up to ANZAC Day this year the inaugural TNT ANZAC Gallipoli Ball is to be held on 15 April. This will feature a black-tie, two-course dinner to be served in the sumptuous surroundings of Australia House on The Strand. London Legacy, a volunteer organisation which looks after the welfare of Australian War widows and their families living in the UK and 37 other countries around the world, is seeking the support of volunteers to help sell pins on ANZAC Day. Legacy is also looking for volunteers who understand its aims to help staff its office for a few hours each month and to assist in other matters.
