Legacy Widows Mark the Start of Legacy Week
|
| Several hundred Legacy Widows made a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne on Sunday
30 August 2009 marking the start of Legacy Week.
A new initiative this year was to extend the commemoration ceremony at the Shrine to include an ecclesiastical service instead of a separate church service as we have done in previous years. There were many highly complimentary comments about the quality of this year’s service led by own Legacy Chaplain, Legatee Graeme Winterton.

| Following the commemoration ceremony at the Shrine, Legacy Widows then proceeded to a most enjoyable luncheon at Zinc Restaurant in Federation Square.
This group of widows whose husbands served their country in war or peacekeeping operations join together each year to honour their spouses who were either killed in action or died subsequently.

| Melbourne Legacy is one of four charities nominated to share the proceeds of the Defence Lake Attack ’fun run' held on 30 August 2009 around Albert Park Lake. It is hoped that the result will match the
2008 results when Legacy received $61,000 - such an amazing result is due to a lot of hard work and diligence by the Defence Lake Attack Committee. We thank all concerned.

| Our celebrity AFL footballer and former Junior Legatee, Ron Barassi fired the starting gun to see the 2,800 participants on their way. The fine autumn weather helped to attract this large number of entrants (20% more than the number who competed last year). After the ‘fun run’ many families stayed on for a picnic lunch and to be entertained by the RAAF Band – it really was just one big happy party.

and pictured is Ron Barassi and Melbourne Legacy President Graeme Standish selling a Legacy badge to Noah Ripple, whose father Martin (runner 873) is Vice President of Air Systems, Thales Australia. Over 200 Thales employees participated in the fun run. They were delighted with news that a team of three from Thales had won
the 2009 Team Challenge.
