State Government helps Legacy fund new scholarship awards
| Thanks to funding support from the Victorian Veterans Council in 2009 Melbourne Legacy is able to award
Tertiary Education Scholarships to nine students.
|
| | Tom Lewin, a fourth year Podiatry student is one of the recipients of the tertiary scholarship and said that the award was a big surprise and had given him a great boost. ‘Whilst Legacy has always helped me with funds for my educational needs including books and travel, the extra funds will help me cope with everyday living costs. It should ensure that I can pay off my HECS fees faster and, heaven forbid, if my car needs mechanical attention, I may not have to get a personal loan,’ Tom said.
|
|
|
| Tom’s father was killed in a plane crash whilst on hazardous service training in 1991 leaving behind a young
widow (Helen pictured with Tom) with a three-year-old son and twin daughters who were not quite five months old.
Legacy takes great pride in the achievement of young Australians like Tom Lewin.

| Melbourne Racing Club (MRC) retains a day in the racing calendar to commemorate ‘Back to Caulfield’ and this
year it highlighted the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the Shrine of Remembrance.
A feature of the ‘Back to Caulfield’ Raceday on Saturday 15 August 2009 was the Legacy Lone Pine Ceremony.
The event has been held every year since 1995 when the tree was planted at the racecourse as part of the
celebration of ‘The Australia Remembers Year’ – the 50th Anniversary of the End of WW2.
|
| | As a result of recent renovations at Caulfield racecourse it was necessary to reposition the Lone Pine tree. In completing the task great care was taken in transplanting the tree to ensure that it remains healthy and a focus for remembrance at the racecourse.
