JANUARY: Somers Camp
| Every year a group of 60 Junior Legatees attend Somers School Camp on the Mornington Peninsula. From all reports, Somers Camp 2009 was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The traditional ‘Colour Group Nights’ and ‘Formal Night’ were favourites along with the annual visit to the Coolart Jazz Festival and the Mornington races. This year we tried out some new activities including the Afrobeat Workshop (drumming), Moonlit Sanctuary and a late night disco complete with DJ.

FEBRUARY: Valentine’s Day trip to Werribee Mansion Rose Garden
| Saturday 14th February 2009 was a Valentine’s Day to remember. Guests clad all sorts of attire to celebrate the day including an entire out-fit covered in heart stickers. After a delicious lunch of sausages and salads we ventured across the grounds to the Rose Garden. Despite the drought, the roses were abundant and the aroma was sensational.

MARCH: BBQ at Lilydale Lake
| Every year Yarra Valley Legacy Group hosts a barbeque for our Junior Legatees. It is an event we all look forward to.
Unfortunately this year we had an unexpected heavy downpour – a very unusual event for the middle of March. However, our Junior Legatees went off to Lilydale Lake with high spirits ready to face the weather. Our wonderful hosts made the best of the situation and cooked the barbeque standing under umbrellas in the rain. They then served lunch to everyone in their seats as they took refuge on the bus! Even the entertainment made do – the band played up and down the bus aisle as everyone ate their lunch. We would like to give a special thank you to Yarra Valley for making such a wonderful effort under trying circumstances.

APRIL: Diamond Valley Minature Railway
| The Diamond Valley Miniature Railway opened their gates especially for our April Rec Day. They provided 20 volunteers who generously gave their time to ensure we all had a
wonderful day.

|
|
MAY: Funky Turtles Band
| The Rock band "The Funky Turtles" travelled all the way from Ballarat to entertain us. Their band is made up of 15 people and has a very interactive and varied repertoire.

JUNE: IMAX and the Mercure Lunch
| On a very cool June 13th morning, a group of Junior Legatees, Leaders and Legatees headed off to IMAX Cinemas to experience a 3D Under the Sea film. We were all handed our goofy 3D glasses upon arrival. There were plenty of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ as fish, crabs, a giant squid and other sea creatures jumped out of the screen and appeared right in front of our noses.

JULY: Bellydancing Christmas in July
| With belly-dancers, sarongs and hanging cloth, our Christmas in July had
an exotic feel this year. We maintained true Christmas custom by sitting down to a traditional 3 course meal of soup, roast turkey and Christmas pudding.

AUGUST: 50s Rock 'n' Roll Day
| Our 50s Rock ‘n’ Roll day started with a few rounds of limbo and a twist contest at Legacy House. We then
headed off to Elwood RSL for a candle-lit lunch in a private room. After lunch we moved into the neighbouring
room waiting for our special guest to make his appearance. After much anticipation, Elvis entered the building!

|
AUGUST: The Creatives - Flowerpot Painting
| First we had to coat the inside of our terracotta pots with a sealer. Once our flower pots were successfully waterproofed we were able to unleash our creativity. We had several colours and plenty of stencils to choose from. The seaside and nature motifs were most popular. One pot had big green ferns, wattle and other flora. Margaret Hopson applied her background and then decorated her masterpiece using free-hand.
|
| |
|
|
Pam Moran brought a wonderful array of stencils with her and created a friendly pot saying ‘welcome’ to all who
would be passing by the plant she intends to put in it. Jo Baful’s fish and shells design would do well for a beach
house present.
If you are interested in joining our art group ‘The Creatives’ please contact Tory Renard on 9663 3564. We meet on
the last Wednesday of every month.

SEPTEMBER: Footy Day
| Footy Fever was rife at Legacy House in September. This month’s Rec Day
saw our JLs in fierce competition with their knowledge of Footy Trivia. We soon discovered that no one was a match for Hellen Broadbent. Her knowledge of AFL was nothing short of incredible. Dulcie Cedaro was not far behind. Ken Hellwig, Des Flynn and the Cole brothers made significant contributions but with Dulcie and Hellen on the same team, the other tables didn’t have much hope.
|
| |
|
|
The handball competition showed off the skills and talents of many JLs. We had several winners in the end.
Luckily there were plenty of prizes to go round.
Footy Bingo was another hit. When Janet Dumbrell’s gentle voice called out a soft ‘bingo’ there were several
envious players.
Once we’d had our fill of party pies and salad we sat back to watch an afternoon of ‘Greatest AFL Grand Final
Moments’.

|
OCTOBER: The Creatives - Christmas Decorations
| With Christmas fast approaching The Creatives put their skills to the test and made table decorations for our up coming Disability Committee Christmas Party.
We created some brightly coloured Christmas trees and stars. We hope to use these as the centre piece for each table.
|
| |
|
|
Once our painted trees had dried we began to apply our tree decorations. Pam Moran’s steady hand produced
some intricate and delicate details on her tree. Legacy House staff members were no match for Pam’s talents but
enjoyed themselves none the less.

DECEMBER: Legacy Long Lunch
| This was our special event jointly funded by a grant received from the City of Melbourne in celebration of
International Day of Persons with a Disability. It is one of our special interest groups with the aim being to break
down barriers within Legacy and to develop more inclusive activities for all members of Legacy. We had a great mix
of people with dependants, mums, Legatees, widows and staff from all areas of the office enjoying the lunch at
Tjanabi Restaurant in Federation Square.
