Anzac Day - Operation Rosemary 2008
Legacy supports the Australian families of deceased defence personnel who gave their lives in war service and hazardous duty. As such, ANZAC Day is one of Legacy’s most significant events during the year to acknowledge these men and women who served Australia.
In the lead-up to ANZAC Day some Legacy Clubs commence an ‘Operation Rosemary’ appeal, where we distribute rosemary in rememberance of those that have fallen. You can get into the community spirit and help Legacy by supplying rosemary, preparing rosemary sprigs, or distributing rosemary on ANZAC Day.
If you are able to support your local Legacy Club on ANZAC Day you can register your interest by volunteering or contacting your local Legacy branch.

Volunteers, Scouts and Cadets begin handing out sprigs of rosemary in the early hours of the morning before the ANZAC Day dawn service, and continue distributing rosemary on the streets during the ANZAC march.
Rosemary is a symbol of remembrance and traditionally sprigs of rosemary are worn on ANZAC Day as a reminder of those who served in times of war. Rosemary has particular significance for Australians as it is also found growing wild on the Gallipoli peninsula. With this in mind, rosemary sprigs are tagged with the message “Remembrance from Legacy,” and are worn pinned to a lapel or button hole as a symbol of remembrance to those who served.
Last year Scouts and Cadets, such as the Newington College Cadets, handed out more than seven thousand sprigs of rosemary in the city alone. Legacy also gives out rosemary at services and marches in other metropolitan and country areas. Thousands of sprigs are required and contributions of any size, or volunteering for distribution is gratefully welcomed for ANZAC Day. Much of the public make a voluntary donation in exchange for a sprig, with funds going towards Legacy’s programs and services which support families of deceased defence personnel.
