Legacy Week - August 29 - September 4 2010
|
|
Legacy is calling on the WA community to show their support for the families of deceased Veterans during Legacy Week 2010.
The iconic appeal which starts on Sunday, 29 August and runs until Saturday, 4 September, follows the recent tragic deaths of Australian soldiers in Afghanistan.
Legacy is dedicated to the welfare of widows and dependents of our Defence Force personnel killed in wars past and present, peacekeeping or hazardous service, or who have died subsequently.
Australians can help Legacy ‘Keep the Promise’ by buying a badge during Legacy Week and wearing it with pride. The pivotal day is Badge Day – Friday 3 September. Show the families left behind your gratitude for their sacrifice.
For the first time, Australians will be able to text their support to Legacy to receive a Virtual Legacy Badge, thanks to Telstra. For every person that sends an SMS by texting ‘LEGACY’ to 044 SUPPORT (044 7877 678), Telstra will donate $1 to Legacy.
Badges can also be purchased at all Commonwealth Bank branches, Telstra stores and Thales offices, (Legacy’s national partners) as well at Dan Murphy’s stores, BWS stores, Australia Post Offices and funeral directors Invocare.
According to the Minister of Veterans Affairs there have been about 50,000 veterans created since the Iraq War in the 1990’s.

Legacy in WA spokesman Richard Whitehead said, “With tens of thousands of Defence Force personnel deployed over recent years, and Australia’s continuing commitment in Afghanistan and to various peace-keeping operations we see a growing demand for Legacy’s services now and well into the future.
Legacy stands ready to support the families of Australia’s 3,500 men and women currently deployed on operations around the globe to ensure they receive assistance and care that is needed at such times, and we maintain a life-long commitment to serving Defence families as required,” David Kelly concluded.
Legacy assists more than 100,000 widows and 1,900 children and people with a disability across Australia, including about 6,500 widows and 50 children and adult dependants in WA. Legacy volunteers provide practical assistance for widows, which may include individual day-to-day contact and support, whilst the organisation assists with medical and financial assistance, advocacy, holidays and education.
