LJPSA 2012

INTRODUCTION
The Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award (LJPSA) is a national competition conducted through the Australian secondary schools and colleges for competitors aged 12 to 14 years. The aim of the LJPSA is to enhance the oral communication and public speaking skills of a 12 to 14 year old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy; voluntary service, caring and comradship and the need for remembrance.

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY
Competitors must be aged 12 or above, but under 15 years of age on the 1st January in the year of the competition.
Competitors, or a teacher on their behalf, must complete the required entry form and agree to abide by the conditions of entry before entries can be accepted.
Speech content must be the original work of the competitor.
Organisers reserve the right to reproduce competitors' speeches.
The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Competitors in the National Final are to provide typed copies of their prepared speeches at the conclusion of the competition.
The two (2) National Finalists from Queensland will be the winner of the Townsville and Toowoomba Legacy Area Competition and the Finals will take place in Tasmania in November 2012.
Legacy will pay for the contestant and a Chaperone's accommodation and airfares to attend.
Competitors are to wear school uniform or an appropriate alternative if a uniform is not part of a school's requirement.
Provided that a competitor has not won a national final, they may compete more than once in the competition.

FORMAT
The format for the competition consists of a prepared speech of five minutes duration on a topic of the competitor's choice within the subject criteria, and an impromptu speech of two minutes duration on a topic chosen by the organisers. Each competitor will have five minutes preparation time for their impromptu speech.

GENERAL CRITERIA
The LJPSA is not debating, elocution or acting. The competition is concerned with the competitor's effective use of language to convey a message or a point of view to an interested audience. Choice of words, intonation, articulation, pace and pausing are all important in conveying the message in a speech. Anything which hinders the transmission of meaning or divets attention from the speaker's prresentation should be avoided. This includes unnecessary movement, irrelevent humour and mannerisms.

Toowoomba Legacy Inc. area of responsibility (consists of a total 27 schools. It is not the Qld State Education region or district) competition will be held on 11th August 2012

"Keeping the promise campaign" September 2nd to September 8th, 2012

The most significant national campaign relying on the Australian communities participation is the annual Legacy Week appeal which is held in the first week of September every year. This is Legacy’s annual fundraising and awareness campaign and relies on the generosity of the Australian community to provide not only money but their time and interest.

Help Legacy during Legacy week as a volunteer fundraising.

Much support is provided by the Army Aviation Training Centre, Oakey and the 7 Signals Regiment (EW) Cabarlah.


Other events include:
  • Fundraising activities at Farmfest in June each year.
  • Tickets to shows at the City Golf Club are provided by Toowoomba Legacy Inc. at no cost to our Widows. Various Bowls Days sponsored by North Toowoomba Bowls Club, Peranga Bowls Club, Drayton Bowls Club, and West Toowoomba Bowls Club – Dates to be advised.
