Bendigo Legacy encompasses five (5) groups which are situated in Kerang, Swan Hill, Echuca, Castlemaine and Macedon Ranges.

Bendigo itself looks after Bridgewater, Inglewood, Tarnagulla, Newbridge, Heathcote and Wycheproof.

In all we have 190 Legatees caring for 2161 Widows, 2 children and 5 disabled beneficiaries. In essence we are
the 11th largest club in Australia.

From the outset we have done our best to care for the dependents of our deceased ex service men and women.
Our incumbent President is an ex Junior Legatee who became a school teacher and principal because of the
support and encouragement given to him during his formative years.

Since 1995 we have enlisted several Legatees through the Legacy Foundation and we are proud of the 27 lady Legatees we have, as they lend an extra dimension to the services we offer.

As our Annual Meeting is held in April and office bears are installed in May, we are on our way with a new Board of Management. Our President Legatee Neil Gill is in his 4th term. He is ably assisted by Legatees George Wood, Senior Vice President, Val White, Junior Vice President, Graham Davis, Secretary, John Lennon, Treasurer,
Caroline Hope Immediate Past President and board members Legatees Lorraine Stilo, Michael McKenzie,
Margaret Hogan, Helen Woodcock, Ian Sides and alternative members Frank Schrivener and Bruce Hope. With Sergeant-At-Arms Legatee Grant Hoppe to keep order they make a formidable group.

Our Group Chairman, Legatees Lis Thomas (Castlemaine), Murray Bray (Kerang), John Munro (Echuca), Ian Arnel (Macedon Ranges) and John Pye (Swan Hill) make up the rest of our Board of Management and each runs
extremely lively and well organised out posts of our far flung empire.

To ensure that all is ship shape and tickety boo we are privileged to have as working members at least half a
dozen 90 + year old members who make us well aware of tradition and 28 women members who keep us
anchored in reality.

Club History

Bendigo Legacy Club was formed on 16 June 1926 and the first meeting was held in Favalaro’s Café. Office
bearers in the Club were Frank Levy (President), George V Lansell and Dr Florence Burke Gaffney (Vice
Presidents).

Daniel Parry (Secretary) and G. Ross Freeman (Treasurer). Membership numbered 28 and consisted of returned soldiers irrespective of rank and one representative only of each profession, trade or calling. Most of the members were young returned soldiers occupying administrative and professional positions in the city.
