Director

Ben Oakes

Ben’s introduction to Legacy was through a campfire story told to him by his mate, a Legacy beneficiary whose father died during the Kokoda campaign of WW2. He was moved by the story enough to visit his father’s grave in Bomana cemetery and subsequently sought out Legacy, to see how he could contribute to an organisation that helped develop a young boy into the great man that is Ben’s mate.

Ben is a current serving Army officer, joining the Army in 1994 as a soldier and commissioning in 2006. He has extensive experience including leadership and staff roles, including supporting change management and organisational development at the formation level.

His family is a Defence family. His wife and three children have accompanied and supported Ben on postings in most states of Australia as well as the UK. Ben believes the support provided by the families need to be repaid; and if the serving member needs support to do so, then that is where Legacy can provide assistance.

Professionally, Ben is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer on the National Engineering Register and has a Master of Science in Guided Weapon Systems.

Ben is a member of Legacy WA where he was the Secretary on the Board for four years. Ben is also a Director on the Board of Wyvern Resilience, a WA based ESO.

Ben was appointed to the Legacy Australia Board in November 2024 and is currently a member of the Advocacy Committee and Legacy Future Committee.
