Peter Bysouth AM DFC grew up in Sydney before joining Qantas as a Business Cadet. He then had over 30 years in the Army, starting as a Private in 1 RNSWR (Commando) before being selected for Officer and Pilot training. He retired with the rank of Colonel after many operational flying, training and command postings, including in Vietnam, PNG, the USA and the UK.
He attended the Royal Military College of Science in the UK and had postings in purchasing, finance, personnel and development before returning to Qantas and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) based in Singapore, negotiating Airports and Air Traffic Control charges.
Peter has a BA in History, a Grad Diploma in International Affairs (Deakin) and a Diploma Company Director (UNE). He has had several directorships in Not For Profits, Health and Military and Qantas Superannuation.
Peter has been in Legacy since 1980, initially in Canberra, then Geelong. He has been a member of Hobart Legacy since 2010, and a Director of Legacy Australia and Co-Chair of Legacy’s Centenary Committee in 2023. He re-joined the Legacy Australia Board in November 2025 and was appointed Chair of the Advocacy Committee in 2025.
Legacy, some part-time work, 4 adult children and 9 grandchildren keep Christine (Chris) and Peter fully occupied.
