Launch of the Legacy Centenary Torch Relay 2023

On 20 April 2022, the official launch of the 2023 Legacy Centenary Commemoration took place at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne, the city in which Legacy was founded nearly 100 years ago by Stan Savige.

 The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay 2023 is a six-month campaign to pay homage to and acknowledge veterans’ families, saluting their sacrifice. 

 The torch will travel over 50,000 kilometres through 100 locations, carried by approximately 1,500 Torch Bearers.

 The relay begins on Anzac Day, 25 April 2023, in Pozieres, France and will travel to London, England, where it will continue its tour throughout Australia.

Chairman of Legacy Australia Eric Easterbrook OAM welcomed notable guests to the event including Andrew Gee MP, Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel, Shayne Neumann MP, Shadow Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel, Shaun Leane MP, Minister for Veterans, Local Government and Suburban Development, Deputy Chief of Army Major General Natasha Fox AM CSC, Captain Ainsley Morthorpe CSM, RAN and Group Captain Ravinder Singh as well as members of the board and directors of Legacy Australia, including CEO, Graham Boyd.

“We continue to support those who have served and sacrificed their health or lives to keep us safe. Our promise to support the missus and kids is why we do what we do,” Mr Easterbook said.

“I’m here today to confirm that we continue to keep that promise alive as we enter into the centenary year and beyond.”

Former Legacy Junior Belinda Green OAM hosted the official launch, with Legacy beneficiaries and Legatees in attendance.

Stanley Walters, Sir Stanley Savige’s grandson, passing the torch to 99-year-old Widow Joyce Quinn

Melbourne Legacy President Legatee Kerry Jenke passed the torch to Stanley Walters, Sir Stanley Savige’s grandson, before it was passed to several Legacy beneficiaries and families, including 99-year-old Widow Joyce Quinn. It was then lit by Legacy supporter and Torch Ambassador Dr Brendan Nelson AO.
