The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay 2023 has visited the iconic sites of Canberra during Legacy Week.
The relay started at the Australian War Memorial and travelled an 18km route, passing Parliament House, Duntroon and Legacy House Canberra before concluding at Government House where the cauldron was lit in the presence of the Governor General His Excellency, General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) and Her Excellency Mrs Hurley.
We were honoured to have Kate MacInnes as our first torch bearer who has been supported by Legacy since 2010, when her father Lieutenant Colonel Andrew MacInnes, passed away suddenly. Legacy has helped Kate access grants and accommodation when she completed a business degree in Sydney. It also helped her with social activities when she was at school, connecting her to other Legacy youth and helping her to attend a commemorative trip to Pozieres, France.
A huge thank you to all 54 torch bearers for taking part in our longest relay leg including Chief of Joint Operations Lieutenant General Greg Bilton, Warrant Officer of the Navy Andrew Bertoncin, Air Commodore James Badgery, Secretary of the Department of Veteran’s Affairs Alison Frame, Former Senator and Olympic Gold Medallist, Nova Peris, and Director of the Australian War Memorial, Matt Anderson.
The relay will now make its way through Victoria. First stop… Mildura.
