Who is classified as a direct descendant?
A direct descendant is a child, grandchild, great-grandchild or legally adopted child of an Australian or Allied veteran or currently serving member of the Australian Defence Forces. You can search for an Australian veteran on the Australian War Memorial website.

When will I find out if my application was successful?
Legacy Central West (NSW) will review your application shortly after you submit. To align with TAFE, university and private college intakes, we aim to advise successful applicants prior to the beginning of the academic year.

Is there an opening and / or closing date?
Applications for our scholarships are open from October to mid-January.

How many scholarships are available?
There is a limit of one scholarship awarded each year.

Do my high school results affect my application?
All applicants will be accessed with consideration of both academic history and financial need.

I am eligible if I choose to study online?
Yes. If you choose to study online, please let us know in your application.

If my application is successful, can I defer my study?
If your application is successful and you are considering deferring your studies, please contact us at [email protected]. Requests to defer study will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

What if I need to make changes to my application after I’ve submitted it?
We ask that you review your application carefully before submitting. If you need to make changes after you’ve submitted your application, contact us at [email protected] and we will consider your requested changes.

Can I submit multiple applications?
We ask that you submit one application per scholarship opportunity, per calendar year. If your first application is unsuccessful in the first year, you’re welcome to apply again the following year.

What makes an application successful?
The judges are looking for applications that express a genuine commitment to their chosen study.

Can I apply for both scholarship opportunities?
If you are eligible to apply, you may submit an application for both scholarship opportunities. If your application is successful, only one (1) type of scholarship will be awarded.

If my application is unsuccessful, can I submit another application? If so, when?
Yes, if your application is unsuccessful, you’re welcome to submit another application for study in the next educational year.

I’m over 25, am I still eligible to apply?
Yes, if you’re over 25, you’re still welcome to apply. Although the eligibility states that you must be under the age of 25, we will consider applications from mature age students.

What documents will I need to submit to prove my financial disadvantage?

  • A current payment summary e.g. Centrelink
  • Current bank statements for the past three (3) months
  • Copies of two (2) recent pay slips (if working)
  • Parents payment summary (if applicable)

What documents will I need to submit to prove I am a direct descendant of a veteran?
You will be asked to provide a copy of the veteran’s official Discharge Certificate or the name, service number, rank and unit of the family member who served or is currently serving as a member of the Australian Defence Forces if a certificate cannot be provided.
